Nolan roots?

I have read that Co. Carlow is the home of many Nolans. My wife's maiden name is Lin Colbert Nolan, the daughter of Michael Andrew Nolan, who was born in Rush (Co. Dublin). He was born circa 1912, the son of John Joseph Nolan and Sarah Jane Archbold. We can't find records of many Nolans in the Rush area, and we suspect they came from the western counties in the 19th century.   Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. Respond here, or email to garyh@starbrow.rose.hp.com   - Gary Hypes -

Seeking information on James SOMERS and Catherine NOLAN married at The Most Holy Rosary Church in Tullow, County Carlow, May 17, 1858. I've been told they lived in OURAGH (?)not far from the church. Children were Marianne b. 1859, Patrick b. 1861, Margaret b. 1864, and Catherine b. 1866. This is the last birth at this location. It may be at this time they immigrated. We believe their other children were born in the U. S. they would be Daniel, John and Peter. Patrick b. 1861, is located in Worcester, Mass. in 1888 and is married to Catherine PROUT. They later moved to Philadelphia, Pa. and to Somers Point, New Jersey.

Looking for information on the parents and ancestors of James Nowlin. He immigrated to the United States in about 1700 with two brothers (John & William), and settled in Goochland County, Virginia. Many of the present day Nolens in Virginia and the Carolinas come from these roots. Probably came from County Carlow. Please respond to "cbnolen@hotmail.com" with any information. Thanks!

Nolan Family

Patrick Francis Nolan, a farmer, was born in County Mayo, Ireland in 1821 and was the eldest son of William and Bridget Nolan. When 22 years old, he left Ireland and came to America and located in New York in 1843. Remained there and in PA and VT fifteen years, working at the trade of founder and moulder, and in 1859 came west to Iowa and located in Stapleton Township, Chickasaw County, IA where he lived until 1882, when he moved to Fredericksburg. He married in 1851, to Elizabeth Armstrong, a native of Ireland, and had nine children: William, Catherine, James, Francis (my great grandfather), Alice, Thomas, Stephan, Maria and Peter. He was school director, road supervisor and town treasurer. The family were members of the Roman Catholic Church.

Looking for info on Martin Nolan (married Ann Connor (O'?). Parents are probably James Nolan and Catherine (if traditional Irish family naming prevailed). Martin was born circa 1819-20 and immigrated to New Jersey betwenn 1848-51 where he sired six children-James (died at 14mos.), John a/k/a Harold, Catherine (Murphy), Mary (Donahoe), Thomas and Martin. All but James were definitely born in NJ and settled in Trenton.

Martin worked in a brickyard where he was killed in an accident in 1859.

Anne Nolan - 08:41pm Jul 19, 2003 Irish (#14 of 50)

Looking for info on Michael NOLAN, born about 1850, parents John NOLAN/Mary LANIGAN. I have info that indicates he was born in Bagenalstown, County Carlow, but not sure of reliability of the source.

Michael's occupation was shoemaker. Emigrated to Newport, Rhode Island, US, between 1870 and 1880.

Michael associated with the Episcopal Church in the US, which makes me wonder if he started out Catholic, Church of Ireland, or something else. Are the Nolans in Carlow generally Catholic?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Anne Nolan

My great-great-grandfather, James Nolan was born in "Ireland" in 1832. He was in the US by 1864, living in Port Henry, NY. He possibly served in the Civil War, so may have been in the country since 1862. He was married to Sarah Ellis. They lived in Port Henry until 1871 and then moved to Saratoga Springs. In 1881 he moved to Amsterdam, NY until his death in 1912. Children included Michael, John (both died in infancy), William, Ellen ("Nellie"), Sarah, Edward, John and Joseph. I'm trying to find out where James was born and who his parents were...

My email is ksnolan_284@hotmail.com

Thanks!

Richard Nolan - 07:37pm Aug 12, 2004 Irish (#17 of 50)

I've always been kind of curious to start tracing my roots. My name is Richard Nolan (48) and was born and raised in Bloomington, Illinois. It is believed that our ancestors were from County Carlow, Ireland but really have no justified proof. My father, Francis (now 82 and still living), was born in Odell, Illinois and was one of thirteen children of John Patrick Nolan and Elizabeth Feehan Nolan. They were farmers in the Odell area until the time of the Great Depression when they were forced off the farm and moved to Fairbury, Illinois. Francis' living siblings at the time of my birth (1956) were (John, Harold, Earl, Helen Nolan-Hughes and Evelyn Nolan-Duffy). All the rest of his siblings passed away early in life. Please e-mail me with any information on relationships you may be aware of or where I could start at rnolan@mcplan.org. Thank you.
